According to encyclopedia Britannica "Malcolm Brewer was perhaps the greatest shipbuilder Maine ever produced."
Having read all I could about Malcolm Brewer, I think he would be pleased to see the Friendship sloop he built for himself being used by the Maine Maritime Ministry to bring the gospel of Jesus Christ to the people on the coast of Maine.
Malcolm Brewer built the Friendship Sloop PATIENCE the old fashioned way-- by hand, carving a half model and than taking the lines off of it for construction.
Encyclopedia Britannica did a TV special entitled, American Character that stated “his craftsmanship was the finest in New England.” PATIENCE is truly a historic Friendship Sloop.
Here we see a hand planer, adz and wooden mallet, tools of wooden boat construction of days gone by.
Here is a picture of the FSS PATIENCE under construction in the Camden shipyard, mid-coast Maine.
Malcolm started construction of PATIENCE in 1957 and launched her in 1965. This photograph was probably taken in 1965 and she looks complete with new paint job still taped off.
1983 Wooden Boat Magazine ran a cover story set of three articles entitled "The Masterful Work of Malcolm Brewer." In the articles there was a quote about the Friendship Sloop, PATIENCE "by all accounts she's a real beauty." Now we know exactly what the people saw. I believe they were right.
Among Friendship Sloops, PATIENCE is unique in that Malcolm added a raised cabin top so she has full headroom in the galley and head. It was a great improvement for a 30' Friendship sloop.
